AMS Online Weather Studies at College Southern Nevada

Barbara Graham, College Southern Nevada, North Las Vegas, NV

College Southern Nevada (CSN) has utilized the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Online Weather Studies since 2000. During this time, the focus of meteorology at CSN has evolved from content delivered material (lecture only), to focusing on student based inquiry and discussion utilizing the real-time meteorological products supplied by the AMS. During the tenure of utilizing the AMS material through online distance education, students of diverse backgrounds have enrolled in CSN's meteorology course. This diversity has prompted the creation of varied lesson plans and specifically helped in the preparation of future elementary education majors at CSN. These education majors are now supplied with the tools, knowledge and information to confidently begin teaching weather to the diverse group of students that they will be encountering. The lessons learned in the classroom has prompted me to collaborate my efforts with Ms. Mary Pike, the Clark County School District (CCSD) K – 12 science standards coordinator, the National Weather Service office in Las Vegas and myself in developing weekend meteorology workshops for K – 12 educators in Clark County, Nevada. The goal of these workshops is to inspire elementary, middle and high school science educators by providing sound meteorological science and interactive weather demonstrations. Along with introducing AMS to CCSD, CSN will help CCSD educators integrate meteorology into their curriculum to satisfy the state of Nevada science standards and requirements.
