Databasing of AOC weather data for public access

Kelly Scott, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO; and P. Flaherty

The Aircraft Operation Center's goal for the summer of 2009 was to actively take steps to make their aircraft meteorological data accessible to the public via the World Wide Web and thus becoming more compliant with the Freedom of Information Act. In order to accomplish this, two parts needed to be completed: an in-house database for organization and efficiency and combining the data with a newly created website. The database was created for AOC meteorologist efficiency. Anyone will be able to tell what is missing, what type of medium the data is on and where it is located. The website contains all flight level data in an .nc file and all dropsonde file data, as well as available error summaries. The website also serves as an interface for NOAA entities and encourages people to be aware of the Aircraft Operations Center. Universities and other scientific branches will now have a plentiful amount of data for research opportunities.
