Turbulent flux responses to leaf density changes

Miliaritiana L. Robjhon, Howard University, Washington, DC; and E. Joseph, C. A. Stearns, and M. K. Payne

When looking at the surface fluxations of latent heat release and sensible heat the Bowen ratio can be determined by taking the ratio of sensible heat versus latent heat release. This research is being conducted to make a comparison between the Bowen ratio and the Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to see the importance of vegetation green up in the metro/rural region in numerical forecast models. The overview of the project is to use on site flux observations from a flux tower and process the daily data into 48 half-hour splits. This data will then be used to determine the Bowen ratio. From the ratio we can then conclude if the flux observations are comparable and reliable to numerical forecast models. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model will be run to determine if the flux is a viable variable to the model and if the model successfully maintains accuracy when forecasting for the vegetation.
