Lightning Data Assimilation over the Pacific Ocean

In this study, we present a method to operationally assimilate lightning data from Vaisala's Long-Range Lightning Detection Network into a mesoscale NWP model and show the results from a case study over the Pacific Ocean. Finally, an approach to the challenge of assessing the performance of an assimilation system over the open ocean is outlined.
