DUSTRAN - A Model for Atmospheric Dust Concentrations

The Dust Transport (DUSTRAN) model has been developed at PNNL to provide estimates of atmospheric dust concentrations resulting from both wind erosion and the generation of dust from vehicle activity. The model was developed in response to needs for these estimates as a result of activities on U.S. military bases, but it has general applicability. Dust sources in the model are represented by an adaptation of published wind erosion models and by emission factors through research carried out by the Desert Research Institute. (U.S. EPA AP-42 emission factors are also an included option). Transport is calculated using the CALMET/CALPUFF/CALGRID modeling system, and allows users to obtain reasonable results with limited meteorological information. The emission and transport components are integrated using a graphical information system for ease of use. This presentation will describe the underlying models and physics of DUSTRAN, its appropriate use, and the user interface. It will also describe additional research and development that is currently in progress.
