One factor that determines the siting locations of the wind and wave “farms” for renewable energy generation is wind patterns. We have developed 6-hourly and 1/4-degree global sea surface wind climatologies from multiple satellite observations (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/rsad/seawinds.html) extending over a decade. These products have been used by several ocean energy researchers and other consulting firms. Here we present the wind patterns in selected regions that are of interest to the ocean energy industry and seek feedback for product improvements. The close relationship between wind patterns and sea surface temperature fronts is also explored. This presentation also seeks to promote collaboration among the ocean energy industry and government agencies that develop ocean observations and products that benefit society.
