A Documentary on the 2010 Hurricane Field Campaign to Inspire and Increase Interest in the Geosciences
Hall E (New Orleans Convention Center )
Gregory Jenkins, Howard Univ., Washington, DC

Atlantic hurricanes are one of natures more devastating natural hazards affecting the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and the United States. Tropical cyclo-genesis and rapid intensification remain important areas of research especially after events such as Hurricane Katrina. While most Americans are familiar with the hurricane hunters, many are not aware of the research efforts that are required for increasing our knowledge about hurricane processes. During the summer of 2010, three field campaigns occurred with a focus on TC genesis and rapid intensification: PREDICT, GRIP and IFEX. A film crew went to Barbados and Florida to conduct interviews and observe the mechanics of s hurricane field campaign. A secondary goal of the film was to inspire students from under-represented groups to consider careers in the geosciences. An overview of the documentary and a promotional will be presented.
