Riverside has developed FLOODAWARE, a mobile Smartphone application on the Android platform that allows users to assess actual or potential flooding in their area. FLOODAWARE uses information on observed and forecast river stages available from NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS). These data are available from the NWS Water website (http://water.weather.gov/ahps/) where users can click on stream gages nationwide and see if they are or are forecast to be in flood. The application displays nearby river conditions based on the user's location, determined by GPS or by entering a city or zip code. The user can view hydrographs of the river and see if the river is forecast to rise or fall. The application is useful for travelers, vacationers and recreationalists visiting a new area or camping near a river, as well as to people who live near a flood prone river, and those emergency response personnel responsible for protecting the public. FLOODAWARE provides a map interface where users can see their location and the location of stream gages. Users can select additional stream gages to assess the flood potential of neighboring areas. The application answers the question “Am I in an area at risk for flooding?”
