Over the past three years, National Weather Service (NWS) Central Region has become increasingly active in deploying Decision Support Services (DSS) personnel to high impact events. This year was especially active concerning hydrologic events with deployments to four separate river flooding locations. Due to the magnitude and duration of the Missouri and Souris River flooding, weather and river forecast offices, FEMA regions, emergency managers, Local, State and Federal Governments and the Corps of Engineers had to ensure communication lines were open to receive the most up to date information. The challenges of maintaining a common voice among the many players in an event can be daunting. The best practices, challenges and actions of the NWS will be highlighted from both the local emergency operations center and regional headquarters perspective.
