The WSR-88D Radar Operations Center (ROC) has expanded the role of Level 1 data as a critical component to providing life-cycle support of the network of WSR-88D systems. WSR-88D Level 1 data is the recorded output of the digital receiver also known as time series or I&Q data. Some of the major applications of recorded Level I data include evaluating the effectiveness of the dual polarization upgrade, optimizing the radars' data quality (e.g., Clutter Mitigation Decision Algorithm and Wind Turbine Clutter Mitigation), and supporting research to operations efforts by validating signal processing improvements. This paper outlines the past progress and current status of Level 1 data recording on the WSR-88D. In addition, an overview of recent and planned applications of Level I data and how it is used with offline playback will be provided.
