Distilling Climate Effects Data From Social Media
Room 353 (New Orleans Convention Center )
This presentation discusses our research on extracting meteorologically-related climate effects data from observations ("tweets") volunteered by Twitter users regarding events occurring around them. Our objective is to understand whether data derived from social media resources can serve to add to our understanding of the effects of meteorological variability and/or volatility at the local and regional scale on various phenological, biological and epidemiological climate indicators. We report on our ongoing data acquisition methodology and present selected results from our studies to date assessing the usefulness of this non-traditional approach to supplementing or extending climate-related knowledge bases collected by traditional means.
