Golden Words From Elementary Kids: Can I Show You My Observation!

The primary reason we decided to do an informal after school weather club at an elementary school was: we are parents and have elementary and middle school age kids. The opportunity arose when a local elementary school of science received funding to offer after school clubs. Well, the decision actually reflected information accumulated from articles and books, as well as many conversations over a couple of years that included elementary and university educators, educators from other countries, professionals, family, and parents. The guidelines for the clubs were that they include academic substance and were fun. We would like to share our experiences and open a discussion on “Where do we go from here?” In our presentation we will give a brief overview of what was involved in preparing for the club and what resources were helpful. We will address such questions as: What effort did it take to get into the classroom? What material did the kids like the best (that surprised us)? What “lesson” did the kids like the best? What did we learn from the kids? What words became music to our ears? ..And anything else that we think of as noteworthy to share.
