Dual-Polarization Radar Deployment: Latest Operational Benefits
Room 357 (New Orleans Convention Center )
Paul T. Schlatter, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD

This talk examines data from recently upgraded Weather Surveillance Radars - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) with dual-polarization capability. Now that dual-polarization data from S-band, operational radars are becoming available for parts of the United States, a few interesting operational benefits have come to light. This talk will look at dust storm detection, a hurricane, heavy rainfall signatures, and tornado debris, and make the connection to how these signatures benefit NOAA/NWS operations and thus improve services to partners.
