The Atmosphere: Dynamics, Energy and Aksel
Room 353 (New Orleans Convention Center )
Charlotte Wiin Havsteen, Danish Maritime Safety Administration, Copenhagen, Denmark

Aksel Wiin-Nielsen made many contributions to the field of atmospheric science. These include numerous scientific articles, with topics focusing on the dynamics of the atmosphere and the different forms of energies. These contributions have helped to make numerical weather prediction what it is today. His passion for teaching and passing on his great understanding of the atmosphere to others was a life-long commitment. Many have not forgotten his patient and logical teaching methods. His wish to see centers of excellence for numerical weather prediction combined with his drive and determination have contributed to the establishment of NCAR and ECMWF - centers on either side of the Atlantic. His achievements will be viewed from our family's perspective. His role as a person, a husband and a father are also important aspects when considering him and his achievements. He was dynamic and energetic, just like the atmosphere, and effected everyone around him.
