Diabatic Normal Mode Initialization for Canadian Operational Global and Regional Numerical Weather Prediction Models

At the Canadian Meteorological Center, the digital filter initialization scheme is used as a regular component of the operational forecast production in Ensemble Kalman Filter or Variational analysis schemes or deterministic forecasting at the global or regional scales. A Normal Mode Initialization scheme has been developed in replacement of the digital filter scheme. The formulation of the scheme and the rationale for doing this will be presented at the conference.
