The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is a non-profit international consortium of more than 460 active members (companies, government agencies and universities) participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface standards for geospatial information and location services to ensure interoperability.
Its activities are organised through two types of Working Groups : "Standard" WGs (SWG), which work on technical specifications, and "Domain" WGs (DWG) with emphasis on community interest, technologies, areas, or fields and outreach in order to empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful for many applications.
Atmospheric, meteorological, climatological and oceanographic information increasingly impact many decisions. The ability to exchange such environmental information in a timely and useful way has always been important but increasing multiplicity of uses in an interdependent world requires much more effective , flexible and easier means of exchanging information.
Meteorological and oceanographic data are complex and specific : they are multidimensional, continually evolving, highly spatial and highly temporal in nature, heterogeneous.
The OGC Meteorology & Oceanography Domain Working Group (Met Ocean DWG) was established in April 2009 to ensure that OGC standards allow the meteorological community to develop effective interoperability for web services and content across the wider geospatial domain.To support consistency between its works and the World Meteorological Organisation activities, a Memorandum of Understanding between OGC and WMO was signed by the end of 2009.
This Meteorology and Oceanography Domain Working Group is an open forum, open to participation by both OGC members and non members, to work on oceanographic, meteorological and climatological data, metadata, and web services interoperability, greatly improving the way in which this information is described, shared and used.
This presentation will present the OGC MetDWG its working processes, and a progress report of the ongoing tasks, emphasizing WMS Best Practices.
