The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) recently completed a comprehensive makeover of the classic Satellite Meteorology for Grades 7-12 online course and CD. (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satmet/). Revisions included a modernized site design and the addition of two case studies: the 2005 Hurricane Season and the 2010 Deepwater Disaster. The updated resource also includes an entirely new module on Suomi NPP, JPSS and GOES-R.

CIMSS also launched the GOES-R Education Proving Ground at the 25th Satellite Educators conference in 2012. This initiative involves the design and development of pre-and post-launch GOES-R activities for G6-12 teachers and students, following the recruitment of a handful of committed educators to participate in sustained interaction with the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) and Risk Reduction programs at CIMSS. Our overall goal is to have scientists from CIMSS work with students virtually during the GOES-R post-launch activity. Select teachers in the Educators Proving Ground community will work through test exercises with GOES data similar to those that scientists run to check data quality after a satellite launch, including but not limited to geo-location determinations and noise assessment. In this way, teachers will be ready to run similar test with their students following the 2015 GOES-R launch.
