GOES-R Algorithm Working Group Winds team continues to assess the performance of the Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) algorithm designated for the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). Using the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) and a proxy data set derived from Meteosat-9 Spinning Enhanced Visible Infra-Red Imager (SEVIRI), this new wind product will be assimilated and evaluated over two seasons. Results will be presented examining the wind's impact on the assimilated state and forecast skill. Motivation for this work includes readiness for GOES-R launch as well as determining advantages in implementing the GOES-R wind algorithm on current GOES satellites for improving Numerical Weather Prediction at NCEP.
