Through a cooperative effort with the USAF 14th Weather Squadron, NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has an archive of the Vaisala National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) data from 1986 to present. Through a contract with Vaisala, the raw data is available to only Government and Military users. However, NCDC is developing several derived products which are freely available for all users. These products include summaries of lightning strikes by county and state, as well as gridded lightning frequency products. The products are produced as standard formats, includingNetCDF, and are available by direct download and web services. The web services provide the ability to subset the data both spatially and temporally.
