S-NPP Data is still in its calibration/validation period but the National Hurricane Center is looking for ways to bring it into operations, all just in time for the 2012 hurricane season. The S-NPP program provides the critical link between today's satellite capabilities to the future benefits of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Satellite Program. Teaming with the JPSS and the GOES-R Proving Ground Programs the NHC continues to identify initiatives to quickly assimilate satellite data into operations and tailored tropical cyclone models.

Every increase in capability is rapidly exploited in NHC's support to national, state, and local emergency managers, to help them make in their planning and preparations for tropical cyclone landfall. It is expected that specific examples of societal benefit will be available from the 2012 hurricane season.
