Detection and characteristics of the Aurora from VIIRS onboard the Suomi-NPP

Recent observations on 09 May 2012 demonstrate that the VIIRS instrument onboard Suomi-NPP satellite is capable of observing an aurora. This proposal seeks to develop an algorithm to detect regions of the aurora using VIIRS observations. The algorithm will make use of the VIIRS Day/Night band, in conjunction with VIIRS thermal channels, to classify pixels that are viewing an aurora. Once the appropriate pixels are classified, the event size and location can be determined. Case study investigations of the VIIRS observed event with other measurements, such as the aurora oval, will be conducted.
