In the U.S., even though the annual number of fires was below average, destructive wildfires were prominent. Colorado had its largest and second largest fires in state history. Three lives and nearly 600 homes were lost in the two fires combined. New Mexico had its largest and most destructive fires in state history. Oregon had its largest fire since 1865. As of mid-October, Washington and California combined had lost over 300 residences and buildings. Smoke impacts were especially obtrusive in New Mexico, the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies this past year. Driven in part by drought and heat, significant fires also occurred globally, impacting Russia and southeast Europe in particular. This presentation will provide highlights of the national and global 2012 wildfire season, describing significant fire events of the year and related impacts.
