Fifth Conference on Urban Environment

P3.2

Urban temperature variations in Jackson, Mississippi and vicinity

Loren D. White, Jackson State University, Jackson, MS; and J. Finney

Results will be described from a pilot observational study of urban heat island effects in the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area. Analysis will include data from a mixture of longterm stations and of portable automated weather stations installed by undergraduate students. Although the data obtained will be used as a foundation for designing a more rigorous urban observing program, an added benefit is the opportunity to build interest amoung undergraduate Meteorology majors in observationally oriented research.
