A relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) system, utilizing an "in-situ" mercury gas analyzer, was constructed and mounted on a tower, 4.5 m above a 24 m tall deciduous forest canopy near Storrs, CT, USA. This paper presents measurements of gaseous mercury fluxes during the winter of 2003-2004. The measurements show evasion of gaseous mercury from the leafless forest occurred at most times throughout the winter season. Turbulent wind gust penetration to the forest floor is shown to be the dominant transport process.
