Comparison Between the Wind and Temperature Fields Within the Roughness Sub—Layer and an Open Area

Eyal Fattal, Israel Institute for Biological Research, Ness-Ziona, Israel; and S. Pistinner and E. Gavze

Wind and temperature measurments were conducted during summer time, deep within an urban fetch, above and below roof level. Two tetheredsondes positioned roughly 50 meters apart above the outer sides of the building surrounding the street, measured the wind direction and speed continuously. The height of these tetheredsondes was varied between 20 and 40 meters above roof level. In addition one reference anemometer was positioned in an open area, outside the city, 10 meters above ground level. Measurements were continuously logged for a period of five days. A comparison between the flow in the different regimes is presented. The effect of an urban area on the flow is discussed.
