Spatial Variability of Wind and Turbulence Observed during Joint Urban 2003

The Joint Urban 2003 was a cooperative undertaking to study transport and diffusion in the atmospheric boundary layer in urban environments. It was carried out in Oklahoma city in the summer of 2003. The Army Research Laboratory deployed a number of measurement facilities, including an array of sonic anemometers mounted on five meteorological towers in Oklahoma city during the Joint Urban 2003.

We present the results of our sonic data analyses from the five meteorological tower measurements. This presentation focuses on the spatial variability of wind and turbulence observed in metropolitan area of Oklahoma City. Intercomparisons of wind and turbulence statistics observed from five tower locations, as well as between urban and suburban areas demonstrate significant heterogeneity of wind and turbulence characteristics in the urban surface layer. Comparisons between our results and previous documented similar results are also presented.
