Predictability of the MJO: GCM and Surface Boundary Condition Sensitivity

PAPER WITHDRAWN

Duane Edward Waliser, JPL, Pasadena,, CA; and S. Liess, W. K. -. M. Lau, C. Jones, and S. D. Schubert

Our previous results (1,2) regarding the predictability of the MJO involved the use of the GLA/NASA AGCM using specified climatological SSTs and a rather simplistic method of generating initial condition perturbations. This presentation will describe results from a number of sensitivity tests that include the use of El Nino versus La Nina SST boundary conditions, a coupled slab mixed-layer formulation for the tropical oceans, as well as the use of the ECHAM AGCM in which breeding was used to generate initial condition perturbations.
