A weather degree program for the new millennium: phase II

In October 1999, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) announced the approval of a Bachelor of Science program in Applied Meteorology. This program was first offered to students enrolling at the residential campus at Daytona Beach, Florida. With the maturation and expansion of the meteorology program as well as the construction of new academic facilities, the degree program will now be offered for the first time to students enrolling at the residential campus at Prescott, Arizona in the Fall 2004 semester. This paper presents an overview of the specific requirements, options, and most importantly the uniqueness of the BS degree in Applied Meteorology at the Prescott campus. The ERAU degree in applied meteorology is the only one of its kind in the nation and emphasizes using and applying theoretical concepts rather than merely deriving them. In addition, the highly desirable location of the Prescott campus and its current and future facilities provide a natural laboratory for studying a wide variety of weather regimes including mountain meteorology and the North American monsoon.
