Progress in Operational Data Assimilation at the Canadian Ice Service

Tom Carrieres, EC, Ottawa, ON, Canada; and M. Buehner

Operational ice information provided by the Canadian Ice Service rely partly on guidance from numerical ice models. Since the quality of the model forecast is highly dependent on initial conditions, several techniques have been investigated for model initialization, including simple averaging and nudging, optimal interpolation and, more recently, 3D-Var. Some results from these studies will be presented along with a review of limitations and difficulties associated with their application in this context. .
