Observations and modeling of the coastal meteorology of the United Arab Emirates during the Unified Aerosol Experiment (2004)

Hourly surface observations of wind speed and direction over the Middle East region are used to build a climatology. Sea breezes occur about 75% of the time throughout the year. Land breezes occur about 70% or more of the time. Observations from a line of stations, Das Island, Qarnen, Dalma, Sir Bani Yas, Alqlaa, Owtaid, and Mukhariz were analyzed to investigate the offshore and onshore extent of the sea breeze. This paper also presents results from a numerical simulation using the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS-TM).
