Structure of the lower troposphere over the Pacific Ocean: information gained from AIRS observations

This study uses Airs observations to examine spatial and temporal variations of lower tropospheric thermodynamic structures over the tropical Pacific Ocean. Atmospheric structures and their changes at daily and seasonal time scales and over large surface areas have not been well-characterized due to insufficient sounding data and the coarse resolution of computer models' products. The Airs multi-channel infrared and microwave observations have produced a vast amount of data at a very high resolutions in both horizontal and vertical dimensions for more than 2 years. The primary studies have suggested a very satisfying accuracy of air temperature profiles over middle and low latitudes over oceans.

In this study, special emphasis will be on the characteristics of the trade wind inversion throughout the study region. Results will be calibrated for regions where radiosonde observations are available. Information gained from this study will contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of tropical trade winds, ITCZ, and associated Hadley and Walker circulation. It is also a demonstration and promotion of one of the many potential applications of Airs' products to scientific research community.
