Development Workshops for Middle School Teachers on Topics in Atmospheric Science

Natalie D Murray, University of Arizona Department of Atmospheric Science, Tucson, Arizona; and T. Canizo

As part of work done under a NASA Space Grant Fellowship at the University of Arizona, a workshop was held to teach the basics of weather and climate to middle school teachers in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). Five three hour sessions were held over a five week period covering topics such as atmospheric composition, cloud and thunderstorm development, precipitation processes, and climate change. As part of the workshop, a tour was also arranged of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Tucson, Arizona.

Another, single day workshop, for elementary and middle school teachers was organized to aid with the transition to the new FOSS, Water & Weather, kits, which have been adopted by TUSD as part of the new science cirrculum. This workshop focused on topics in climate change as well as specifics of local Arizona weather, particularly the North American monsoon.

We will discuss the content of these workshops and our experience in developing and conducting them, along with teacher feedback.
