NEXRAD Product Improvement—Current Status of WSR-88D Open Radar Data Acquisition (ORDA) Program and Plans for the Future

The National Weather Service Office of Science and Technology will present an overview and status of the NEXRAD Product Improvement (NPI) Program Open Radar Data Acquisition (ORDA) project and plans for future improvements. The Sigmet Digital Receiver/Signal Processor (RVP8) and the Antenna/Radar Controller (RCP08) were selected to replace functionally equivalent components of the current legacy RDA. Sigmet uses PCI-based hardware running a Linux operating system. The Sigmet design affords implementation of signal processing enhancements by way of application programming interfaces, allowing integration of developer software via a well-defined interface to the Sigmet software. The human-computer-interface (HCI) has been implemented using Java-based applications, expediting both the local and remote HCI solutions. Future NEXRAD improvements, such as Range-Velocity Ambiguity Resolution, Super-Resolution, and Dual Polarization will use ORDA as their foundation. RSIS is the contractor responsible for development, production and deployment of the Open RDA. The NWS Office of Science and Technology Program Management and project engineering staff are collocated with the RSIS project team in Norman, Oklahoma, which facilitates expeditious and informed program direction. Production deployment is targeted to begin March 2005.
