DataStreme meeting extras: taking teachers a step further through delightful demos, fantastic fieldtrips, and terrific tours

The AMS DataStreme Atmosphere, Water in the Earth System and Oceans are teacher enhancement courses aimed at providing content rich instruction in the atmospheric, hydrologic and oceanic sciences. All three are delivered twice per year over a twelve week period via the Web with three or four face to face meetings. Course delivery is by a Local Implementation Team consisting of three professionals including at least one who has undertaken specialized AMS leadership training through the Maury Project, Project Atmosphere or Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Program. The LIT team plans and runs the meetings and mentors the teachers in a collegial atmosphere where everyone learns. Over the past several years LIT’s in Wisconsin have expanded the content of the face to face meetings with specialized tours, classroom ready demos and field experiences that have ranged from caving excursions to water quality study to groundwater modeling. Special classroom-ready chemistry demonstrations featuring water and a floor to ceiling ‘tornado” vortex model have been featured during meetings enhancing the usual fare of tours and review of hands on learning activities. This poster will review some of the activities that have enriched the DataStreme experience of participant teachers.
