Observation of clouds and aerosol with elastic depolarization lidar during the Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment

The Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE) will be conducted in the north slope of Alaska through September and October of 2004 to provide detailed observations of mixed phase clouds. The experiment will include two aircraft and two ground sites. The first ground-site is the permanent Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program site in Barrow. The second ground-site instrumented by PNNL Atmospheric Remote Sensing Laboratory (PARSL) will be located at Oliktok Point near Prudhoe Bay. Both ground sites will host a full complement of passive and active sensors including cloud radar and depolarization lidar. Depolarization lidar have demonstrated skill in distinguishing phase in cloud and aerosol. Observations from depolarization lidar at both ground sites will be presented.
