Implementing Marine XML for NOAA Observing Data and GIS integration

Nazila Merati, PMEL and JISAO, Seattle, WA; and E. F. Burger and C. Sun

This paper will describe Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory’s (PMEL) experience with developing Marine XML schema for Argo profiling floats that are a critical component of NOAA's ocean observing systems. Currently, the data delivered by project are available to users via the WWW but are not easily imported into GIS formats. The release of ArcGIS 9 will allow NOAA's observational data to be imported into a geodatabase to be used for data display and analysis. We will describe a GIS implementation using Marine XML including implementing a data dictionary and schema, conversion tools and performance issues in bringing the data into a geodatabase and the possibilities of using MarineXML as a way of data distribution via web services.
