National Weather Service Regional Application and Perspective
Melinda Bailey, NOAA/NWS, Fort Worth, TX
During the last few Summer's, some of the Forecast Offices in Southern Region (SR) of the National Weather Service (NWS) have participated in testing a web-based heat/health warning system. The NWS currently uses minimum overnight temperatures and heat indices to decide when to issue heat watches or warnings. This new heat/health system is used as another guidance product for forecasters in making their decisions on when to issue a heat watch or warning. The heat/health test is based on demographics, history of mortality, and air mass synoptic meteorology. Recorded presentation
