Other Planned Instruments – SIS & SEISS

Space Weather instrumentation planned for GOES-R continues a long history of observations from the GOES program with expanded services to protect those adversely impacted by variable conditions in the solar and near-Earth space environment. This presentation will describe the status of the space weather instrument suites for GOES-R. The solar instruments, called the Solar Imaging Suite (SIS), will measure solar x-rays and solar EUV radiation. A solar coronagraph (SCOR) is part of the SIS suite of instruments, and is currently designated as a pre-planned product improvement instrument. The energetic particle instruments, called the SEISS (Space Environment In-Situ Suite), will provide multiple measurements characterizing the charged particle population, including measurements of the electron, proton, and heavy ion fluxes. Earth's magnetic field will be measured by magnetometers (MAG). The magnetometer and its boom will be part of the spacecraft procurement. The measurements made by these instruments contribute to the global observations that are used in NOAA's Space Weather Operations to continuously specify and forecast conditions in the space environment.
