GOES-R/NPOESS Symposium

NPOESS Mission Capabilities: VIIRS

W. Paul Menzel, NOAA/NESDIS, Madison, WI

Capabilities for detecting land, ocean, and atmospheric features will be enhanced operationally by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). With 22 multispectral visible, near infrared, and infrared observations at resolutions ranging from 400 m to 800 m, VIIRS will enable the generation of environmental data and products of exceptional quality. Examples include cloud property estimation, fire detection, clear-air land/water surface characterization, sea surface temperature estimation, ocean color product derivation, and low light visible imagery. VIIRS will combine the radiometric accuracy of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) currently flown on the NOAA polar orbiters with the high (0.65 kilometer) spatial resolution of the Operational Linescan System (OLS) flown on DMSP. Several example land, ocean, and atmospheric products developed by the MODIS Science Team will be presented.
