Satellite Observations for Science Education

Our team has designed a web-based learning activity for our first module on a NASA funded REASoN project: Satellite Observations for Science Education (SOSE). The module “Hunting Icebergs” uses MODIS data and trains students the best orbits and wavelength regions for identifying and monitoring iceberg formation and movement. One of the purposes of these activities is to demonstrate to users the quantitative information in satellite data, including geo-location, determining size of an object and tracking the movement (e.g. speed) of an object using satellite imagery.

The instructional design activities used in the development of this module include: 1. Analyze instructional needs and user scenarios. Articulate goals, content and learning outcomes of each module/object. 2. Develop instructional treatment strategies for each module/object. Create rough mock-ups of object designs (proof of concept) 3. Conduct focus groups with samples of potential target users. Get feedback and additional design specifications. 4. Develop final blueprint designs for each module/object. 5. Create rapid prototypes of learning objects/modules. Get user feedback and revise (formative evaluation). 6. Design and develop module/lesson including instructor support materials. Get user feedback. 7. Field test sample lessons. Get feedback and revise.

This talk will demonstrate the design and interactivities associated with this module and discuss the developmental approach used by the team.
