Space Weather Training In the National Weather Service
Barbara Poppe, NOAA/Space Environment Center, Boulder, CO
NOAA Space Environment Center has joined the National Weather Service as the newest center in NCEP. To make the transition from the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research office, training on NCEP and NWS procedures and resources has been offered to all staff in SEC. Collaterally, NWS staff have been introduced to a new aspect of weather—Space Weather—and about another operational center providing forecasts and warning to the nation. This collateral training will be the focus of this presentation.

The types of training given to NWS staff have been determined considering the various audiences and requirements for information. Three been identified:

1. Introduction to the new center and what it does; audience is all of NWS

2. Introduction to the space environment, space weather products and customer needs; audience is all MET Offices (WFOs)

3. Specific physics and resulting products to serve industry-specific customers; audience is select forecast offices likely to interface with these customers

Progress on each phase of the training will be stated and completed materials will be shown.
