Investigating the climatic effects of the NAO over Greenland using Polar MM5

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the leading mode of variability of the extratropical atmospheric circulation in the Atlantic region. Each phase of the NAO is associated with characteristic temperature, precipitation and circulation patterns over Greenland, patterns which occur as a result of interaction between NAO wind forcing and the mesoscale features of this region. The current work utilizes the Polar MM5 mesoscale atmospheric model to study the climatic effects of the NAO over the Greenland ice sheet. Focus is placed on assessing model sensitivity to the ice sheet topography and sea-ice representation, and on examining the role of sea surface temperature in generating the NAO-related climate response.
