Autonomous Doppler lidar wind and aerosol measurements for Pentagon Shield
An autonomous Doppler Lidar was installed in April of 2004 on a building rooftop near the Pentagon and was used for the Department of Defense’s atmospheric dispersion survey conducted from April 19 to May 15, 2004. The primary function performed by the Doppler Lidar was to provide high-resolution volumetric wind data to support enhanced monitoring and prediction of the airflow around the Pentagon, and the associated transport of gases and their infiltration into the building. In addition, the same sensor is collecting volumetric aerosol data. The Pentagon Shield survey, which used a disparate array of sensors to measure temperature, wind speeds, wind direction, and other data, will improve knowledge about the weather conditions and movement of simulated airborne contaminants. Knowledge gained about the airflow around the Pentagon, and the associated transport of gases and their infiltration into the building, will aid the development of an advanced chemical and biological protection system for the Pentagon and its occupants. Moreover, these efforts will lead the development for improved systems to protect other Department of Defense facilities. This paper will describe the autonomous lidar as a stand-off detection system and its current operational status, providing sample wind and aerosol data animations.
