Comparison of GWOLF and VALIDAR Doppler Lidar Measurements
A lidar intercomparison facility at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) has been established in support of long term evaluation of lidar performances. Currently, the facility includes the co-located Ground-based Lidar Wind Observations (GWOLF) and NASA’s Validation Lidar (VALIDAR). GWOLF is the airborne Twin Otter Doppler Wind Lidar (TODWL) system and scanner housed in a mobile trailer. GWOLF is funded by IPO as part of the NPOESS development of a calibration and validation program for space based wind observing systems such as QuikScat, WindSat, CMV, WVMV, and future DWLs. VALIDAR objectives include demonstration of advanced 2-micron components in a complete system and making field validation measurements. The NASA facility has a paved lot and can support up to four lidar systems, utilities, and surveyed targets. Future plans include adding a direct detection system to the facility. This paper intends to present recent intercomparisons of GWOLF and VALIDAR observations; hard target experiments, cloud return studies, and vertical motion studies.
