Feature-track winds derived from MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Aqua and Terra polar-orbiting satellite imagery provide data coverage in polar regions where feature-track winds derived from geostationary satellite imagery are unavailable and where few conventional observations are available. Despite the successes at ECMWF in assimilating MODIS winds operationally, early tests using these winds in NAVDAS (NRL Atmospheric Variational Data Assimilation System) had mixed results. Furthermore, significant changes in the processing of these winds at CIMSS (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison) occurred in Spring 2004. As a result, further testing in NAVDAS was required before this dataset could be utilized operationally. This presentation details the processing and quality control of MODIS winds proposed for operational use at FNMOC (Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center) and the impact of MODIS winds on NOGAPS (Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System) forecasts.
