The NOAA NWS Weather Event Simulator (WES) is an openly available software package that supports training and research using NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) operational software (the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System; AWIPS) and archived data sets. Since its initial deployment in August 2001, the WES capabilities have continued to expand on an annual basis to include: 1) recent AWIPS builds, 2) enhanced AWIPS functionality, and 3) training enhancements. One of the major recent improvements to WES is the addition of the Flash Flood Monitoring and Prediction System (FFMP) component of AWIPS. Other significant enhancements to WES are planned for the Build 4 version of WES in addition to AWIPS OB4. This paper will discuss the recent improvements to the WES leading up to the OB4 version of WES.
