An Evaluation of Daily Disaggregated Precipitation from Monthly Gauge Analyses

Rain gauge analyses are the most accurate observation of point precipitation, but are most widely available over much of the globe only in monthly form. Satellite estimates of precipitation are available much more frequently and can be used to disaggregate the rain gauge analyses. We evaluate the ability of the CMORPH satellite-based precipitation analyses to disaggregate monthly rain gauge analyses. We do this by summing daily rain gauge analyses over the U.S. to yield monthly totals, using daily CMORPH analyses to disaggregate the monthly total analyses to daily amounts, then compare the disaggregated amounts with the observed daily values.
