WRF Simulations of the November 11, 2003 AIRS II field experiment

William Hall, NCAR, Boulder, CO; and P. R. Field, R. Rasmussen, and G. Thompson

I new microphysical scheme based upon the works of Thompson et. al. (2004) has been implemented into the WRF model. The new scheme is designed to be used for the forecasting of freezing drizzle in mid-latitude winter storms. The paper will present WRF model simulations with the new scheme for the AIRS II November 11, 2003 field experiment. The paper will focus on the major attributes of the new scheme and comparisons with in-situ aircraft data will be presented. Additional microphysical model developments including improvements to the rain water and snow field interactions and other microphysical spectra assumptions will be discussed.
