Hawaiian Islands National Marine Sanctuary/National Geographic Field Study

The National Marine Sanctuaries 2005 Field Study Program in partnership with the National Geographic Society was held August 4-9,2005 at the Coconut Island Marine Institute near Honolulu, Hawaii. Twelve K-12 Teacher-Student research teams were selected from around the USA to participate in this unique program. The three main themes of the program were: Interconnectedness, Sense of Place, and Ocean Conservation and Stewardship. Teachers and students, were introduced to Marine Sanctuary staff, researchers, and gained hands-on experience in gathering marine data. Photographers from the National Geographic Society instructed/mentored participants through a "Media Project" which resulted in the completion of a powerful resource that captures the week's activities and events, and more importantly, satisfies through the art of photography, the three Mission Themes. This reource will be used to present the experience to educators, community and civic leaders, and friends in hope that they too gain a better understanding of the role of our oceans in our world today. This presentation will include a description of the activities and photgraphs during the workshop, and introduce/show the "Media Project." .
