Changing Demands for Aviation Weather Workstation

John A. May, NOAA/NWS/NCEP, Kansas City, Missouri; and K. L. Johnston

The developing requirements for aviation weather products to manage air traffic and increase aviation safety will place new demands on meteorological workstations. The new demands not only come in the form of better meteorological analysis tools in four dimensions, but also extend to new demands in production needed to provide products with high spatial resolution, high refresh rates, and with numerous projections into the future. Work station developers must also consider the changing product formats required for various users: gridded and object-oriented digital formats to create graphics and feed air traffic management software, as well as text for voice communications. The development of aviation weather workstations must also consider the future of automated aviation weather products and the human's role of efficiently adding value to these products until they are accurate enough to become stand-alone primary weather products. .
